Mechanicville firefighters rescue car accident victim with borrowed Jaws of Life, purchase set of their own..
From: The Saratogian Written By LUCIAN McCARTY - Original Story
MECHANICVILLE — Mary Grace and Sal Izzo consider themselves lucky.
“I’m an avid lotto player,” Sal said with a smile to his wife of 45 years.
In fact, he and Mary Grace were on their way back from scratching a few tickets just before 10 p.m. July 24 when a driver ran a stop sign two blocks from their home and smashed into the front passenger-side door of the Izzos’ mini-van.
When Mechanicville volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene, they found Mary Grace pinned to the passenger-side floor of the vehicle with a torn aorta, a crushed pelvis, a broken leg and three broken ribs.
“I was alternating between screaming and praying to the Lord Almighty we would be OK,” she recalled. “It seemed like three years, but it really wasn’t that long.”
Sal estimates she was pinned in the vehicle for about a half-hour from the time the accident happened until she was put on a stretcher. One of the reasons why the Izzos feel lucky is it could have been longer.
The Jaws of Life were needed to remove the crumpled door to get to Mary Grace. “We needed to access her from the passenger’s side so we didn’t add to her injuries,” Mechanicville Fire Chief John Dunn said.
Normally, the department would need to call a neighboring town for a set of Jaws of Life to extricate a trapped victim from a vehicle because Mechanicville has never had its own set. But it so happens that the night of the Izzos’ accident, Dunn had a battery-operated set in his personal vehicle.
“It was a real fluke of luck,” Dunn said. The Jaws of Life were on loan from MES, a firefighter equipment distributor, so Mechanicville firefighters could learn how to use them and decide whether to get a set. “That Sunday night I called them up and said ‘You aren’t getting these back,’ ” he said.
The department had just received a $175,937 Assistance to Firefighters grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which enabled the department to purchase expensive equipment such as the Jaws.
“Luckily, we got the grant and we were able to get (the Jaws),” Dunn said.
The chief said the firefighters who responded had Mary Grace out of the vehicle within minutes of deploying the Jaws of Life.
“The guys worked with them like they’d had them for years,” Dunn said. “Within two to three minutes of our arrival we had the passenger door off and Mary Grace being moved onto a stretcher.”
The grant also provided airbags to deploy under a vehicle to lift a side and gain access to a trapped passenger, 45 sets of firefighter gear, hose, a hose dryer and a disaster trailer. “This is all big-money stuff and we have a really limited budget,” Dunn said. “There is a ton of equipment we’ve been able to get with that grant.”
“John did an outstanding job with it; it was an excellent move buying (the Jaws),” Mechanicville Commissioner of Public Safety Tim Hipwell said.
According to the Izzos, their luck did not end with the equipment the firefighters had on hand. Mary Grace said all of the emergency responders were excellent and managed to keep her calm in a situation that was anything but. “We’ve been fortunate, everyone we’ve dealt with through this has been good to us,” she said.
After the accident, while emergency responders helped Mary Grace, a neighbor brought Sal up on to her porch to help him stop the bleeding from a cut on his face.
“We’ve wanted to thank everyone, particularly the neighbors, for literally taking care of us that night,” Sal said.
Before Mary Grace was free of the vehicle, paramedics rushed Sal to the hospital. It was three days before the two were reunited. “That was one of the happiest days of my life,” Mary Grace said. “Sitting in my wheelchair, I looked up to see him sitting in his wheelchair in the doorway.”
Mary Grace spent six days in the trauma center at Albany Medical Center and a month in Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital. Three months after the accident she still needs to use a wheelchair to get around.
“My goal is to be walking for the first of the year,” she said. “We are just very lucky to be alive.”

ERT and MES Announce Strategic Partnership
Ann Arbor, MI (April 22, 2010) – ERT Systems, LLC is pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with Municipal Emergency Services, Inc. (MES). Under this agreement, MES will add OnSite ERT, ERT’s wireless accountability system, to its extensive line of firefighter safety equipment and services.
“It’s the perfect opportunity for us,” said Mark Beauvais, Vice President of Sales at ERT Systems. “MES is the largest supplier of firefighting equipment in North America, and this gives us immediate access to over 120 sales representatives across the US. It would take us years to build a sales organization that size on our own, and even then we couldn’t offer the range of benefits that MES provides its customers.”
John Skaryak, Vice President of Marketing at Municipal Emergency Services, added “This partnership allows us to supply our customers with an evolutionary accountability and asset tracking system that has not been available in the market place before. This new system was designed by firefighters and their unique software allows fire department management to have access to real time personnel tracking built around typical firefighting scenarios. Another reason MES choose to sell the OnSite ERT system is the customization that their management team has provided in working with individual fire department’s concerns and needs when it comes to accountability.”
The partnership was announced at the FDIC 2010 in Indianapolis, the largest fire equipment and training show in the US, and was welcomed by both ERT’s and MES’ customers. “It’s great,” stated Chief Gerald Marion of the Englewood Fire Service in New Jersey. “We have a long and trusted relationship with MES, and I am very impressed with the safety and control that OnSite ERT brings to the fireground. It’s a win for all of us.”
